ABSTRACT

Ab-initio creation of matter involves several basic processes which include generation of atomic species as the building blocks, transport of the species through an appropriate medium, and interaction with a suitable substrate followed by nucleation and growth processes. Building blocks can be created in the form of atoms , molecules , ions , radicals , clusters ,etc depending on the technique and the starting material used. Numerous techniques categorized as physical , mechanical , chemical , electrochemical , plasma, hybrids , ranging from very simple to very sophisticated ones , have been developed over the last few decades. A substrate can be chemically inert, active, reactive, or nucleation- selective. A number of deposition parameters combined to determine the structure, microstructure, topography and properties of the growing material. These parameters include the number density of the building blocks, their energy, any residual charge , and direction of incidence on the substrate, physical and chemical properties of the transport / ambient medium , physical and chemical properties of the substrate , temperature of the substrate, etc. Depending on the technique and the starting material, deposition parameters can be varied to yield nano-matter in the form of quantum dots of different shapes, nanoclusters, nanorods, nanowires, nanotubes, sponges, very rough or atomically smooth surface thin-films, etc. Relaxed solubility conditions in the case of co-deposited species of different materials yields exotic materials in the form of man-made ****stable alloys and compounds. By sequential deposition of different atomic or molecular species, nano-matter with a periodic , or periodic-aperiodic lattices of a combination of widely different starting materials can be created to yield new properties and physical phenomena and consequently new device applications. An intelligent control of deposition parameters and deposition conditions allow tailorability of some of the properties of the resulting nano-matter. Thus, various thin-film techniques enable the creation of 0, 1 , and 2 dimensional, tailorable and designer nano-matter of considerable scientific and technological interest . This Review will highlight the developments in the broad area of the science and technology of tailored nano-matter in the form of thin-films .
