The one dimensional infinite square well is one of the most famous applications of the time-independent schrodinger equation and represents a particle of mass m bound by an infinite potential. The infinite square well can be used to approximate a number of quantum mechanical systems such as an electron "caught" in between two p-type semiconductor layers in a transistor. If the transistor is reverse biased and the base-collector voltage is very large and positive , an electron is trapped between the base and emitter layers of the device . another application of this is could be a photon trapped in a laser cavity.
