Formation of Moon
The Four Theories In Brief
1. Sister (or Coformation) Theory
*Earth and Moon formed as a double planet system
*Same time from the same pre-planetary material
PROBLEM: Moon differs in density and composition
*** *** ***
2. Capture Theory
*Moon formed far from Earth
*Captured by Earth’s gravity
PROBLEMS: (1) Lunar mass is very large relative to Earth – capture is physically improbable
(2) Similarities in mantle compositions…unlikely that the moon formed in a totally different part of the solar system
*** *** ***
3. Daughter (or Fission) Theory
*Rapid spin of a young, molten Earth ejected material off the surface and into space
*Ejected material re-accreted in orbit around Earth
PROBLEM: Problems modeling this spin of Earth required too fast
*** *** ***
4. Impact Theory
*Earth was struck by a differentiated Mars-sized object
*Impactor’s iron core combined with Earth’s iron core
*Impactor’s mantle and some of Earth’s mantle ejected into orbit
*Energy involved caused volatile elements (i.e. hydrogen, oxygen) to be lost from ejected material
*Material coalesced in orbit around Earth

And this is the most widely accepted model due to its credibility … provides explanations for
a. Similarities between moon’s mantle and Earth’s mantle
b. Moon’s lack of volatiles and a dense iron core

وآخر دعوانا أن الحمد لله رب العالمين
